Having won the Lithuanian Ritas Vilnius, the Kazan team became the sole leaders of the group in the European Cup.

Unlike the Montenegrin “Mornar”, the team from the capital of Lithuania is one of two Lithuanian superclubs, only “Rytas” (stars translated into Russian) and “Zalgiris” from Kaunas sharing the top positions of  Lithuanian Championship.

For the first time “Statiba”, the team was originally called, and UNICS met in October 1997 in Vilnius, where the hosts were stronger, 85:72. Then our teams met in the play-offs of the Saporta Cup in the 2001–2002 season and the FIBA ??Champions Cup in the 2002–2003 season, in both cases UNICS won the series 2-1.

Today’s match UNICS began with the following starting five: Trent Lockett, Maurice Ndour, Jamar Smith, Maxim Sheleketo and Pierria Henry. Melvin Ejim and Anton Ponkrashov, as well as Reymar Morgan did not get into the application, continuing to recover from injuries. And in the first 4 minutes only Smith and Ndour scored, 8: 4, but team fouls 4-2.  And if in the middle of the quarter after the throw of Smith, Kazan take the lead by 5 points, 13: 8, then after a couple of minutes, the Lithuanians are ahead, 15:16. In UNICS went on the parquet: Kostas Kaimakoglou, Yevgeny Kolesnikov, Artem Klimenko entered the game. As a result, the guests won the first quarter with a symbolic advantage, 19:20.

Eric McCollum came on as a substitute, he returned the advantage to the citizens of Kazan, 25:23. Andrei Koscheev changes Klimenko. However, most of the quarter is either equal to or ahead of the Lithuanians. Finally, Smith from behind the arc for the second time returned the advantage to UNICS, 30:29 for 3-41 before the big break. The main thing is how the rivals completed the quarter. Since the middle of the period, the hosts made a breakthrough with the score 11-3! So the teams left for a big break with the scores 41:32. Good quarter.

Kazan also started well in the third quarter, Sheleketo scored from behind the arc with a foul and made the score 45:34, Ndour added. However, the Lithuanians quickly responded, 48:45 in the middle of the quarter, Rytas jerk 11-1. It's only the beginning. The defense of UNICS can not cope with the attacks of the guests. And now in the assets of the owners of all "plus 1", 50:49. Very on time, Kaimakoglou and McCollum were one after another from afar, 56:49. This was the answer UNICS 8-0, 58:49 one minute before the end of the third quarter. The home team is better on rebounds, 32-27.
Everything was finally decided in the last 10 minutes. The fourth foul quickly got Ndour. But Smith got a “three”, 61:54. But fouls 5-1. Sheleketo sells his fourth long-range shot, 70:60, to play another half a quarter. Guests are still more likely to lose the ball, allowing UNICS to attack more often. The tenth team`s “three” performed by Lockett brings the advantage of Kazan to 12 points, 78:66. But with the fifth foul Sheleketo finishes his game, this is a serious loss, Maxim by that time scored 15 points. Nevertheless, UNICS confidently brought the match to victory, leading the group with two wins in two rounds.

UNICS (Kazan, Russia) - Ritas Vilnius (Vilnius, Lithuania) - 86:73 (19:20, 22:12, 17:20, 28:21). The most productive: UNICS - Smith (19), Lockett (13 + 9 rebounds), Sheleketo (15); Ritas - Servidis (17), Ehodas (10), Sutton (14).
