UNICS celebrated the road win in Tel-Aviv to take sole possession of first place in Group M with a 3-0 record.

It goes without saying, that a win fully represents the teamwork and the ability of the squad to comprise all efforts for one goal. At the same time, one should not underestimate the so called stars, the go-in guys, able to break the game’s flow in crucial moments, and seal it in their team’s favor. The road clash against “Maccabi”, 5-time Euroleague champion, was the most illustrative example of the latter. Mr.Langford the great helped the Israeli club joinining a good pool of star-teams, which used to suffer defeats by UNICS Kazan.

As a matter of fact, the season 2015/16 turned to bring the worst fruits for the Israeli basketball leader-team. For the first time ever, they did not qualify to the Euroleague Top16, preserving some chances to claim for the Eurocup title though. They started the Last 32 celebrating two wins in the Group M to be stopped somehow by the guests from Kazan.

Evgeny Pashutin knew pretty well, that his opponents will be a tough team to play. Therefore he analyzed their game in details, and was as shrewd as an eagle to make his home-set-combinations work well. Counting for the long shots, he played Milaknis early. With the view to be competitive in the paint, he played Parakhouski. UNICS had actually a good start. Kaimakoglou and Likhodey got UNICS on the scoreboard, 6:2. Hosts had their response hot ready. They played 2 of their 7 American players. Mbakwe and Onuahu did a great deal of work at the front line.  Langford need time to feel the rhythm and got no points. Colom entered the court after 5 minutes of play. Opponents traded points. Rochestie hitting a long shot teammed Mbakwe bringing his team 3 points up, 17:14, and then 16:19. Colom leveled the difference, making good use of the 2+1 scheme, 19:19. Milaknis got his first out-of-the-arc-thamahawk to seal the first quarter for Kazan, 24:23.

UNICS saw, there were problems playing defensively. We used to loose one-on-one combats to Mbakwe and Onuahu. We let them have easy balls in the paint. Neither front nor center was guarded like they should. Hosts always punished such mistakes. Ohayon hit 3 points to make it 32:28. Milaknis responded, 33:32. T hosts never gave up as Pnini made a fast break, and Smith collected 6 points via 2 shots, 33:40 at 4 minutes to go. Pick-n-rolls were of good use for them as always. Ponkrashov did not cope with Rochestie, 33:42, and it was Kaimakoglou, who succeeded shooting at the arc, 39:44. Ofoegbu hit another 3 pointer just to see 6 points lead of Maccabi, 47:41. It was the high time for Langford to come to rescue. It took him 2 minutes to earn 7 points cutting back the gap to -1, 48:49.

Langford got another 9 points early in the third quarter, 57:51. One more long shot of his opened up a 8-points lead for the guests, 62:54. UNICS did not keep the margin, conceding 7 points to go, 62:61. At 2 minutes to go Pnini made the score even, 64:64. Colom was active and smart, making opponents draw fouls and collecting 5 out of 6 free throws. As a result, the last but one period came to a close at 71:68 for our club.

Williams teamed Millaknis to return back +6, 76:70 after 2 minutes of play. Maccabi called time-out as the hosts head coach Zan Tabak shrewdly saw the risky path around. Anyway, Langford was not possible to stop, 80:70. Milaknis followed his model, 83:72 and there was no surprise, that our defensive play came to balance. The first 5 and a half minutes were just 4 points for the hosts. Tabak called for the second minute to analyze with his team what is to be done. Pnini got 2 long shots and afterwards saw Langford working on his magin. “Maccabi” called time-out for the third time at -12, 90:78, with 1 minute to go. It brought no fruits for them as UNICS sealed their third win at the start of the Eurocup Last 32, 92:82 to place atop of the group M.

Postgame comments

Zan Tabak, “Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv” head coach:

-During the first half, we were basically able to keep the score even. There were just a few times during the game that we got control of the defense. Most of the time when we had control of the defense they were able to outrebound us. At the end of the third quarter and in the fourth quarter, we had a little problem with man to man defense against the pick and roll, and it was a different kind of defense. And we had a problem with the rebounds, we were not able to play and it cost us important rebounds. But also at the beginning, when we were having four big guys, we had a problem with the rebounds. Also there were a lot of important shots without good defense made by their guys.

Evgeny Pashutin, UNICS Kazan head coach:

-I think our guys played better defense in the third and fourth quarter than in the first two, and we were able to prevent Maccabi from scoring. They have a lot of good shooters and scoring ability and especially at home they are way up there. So it was really difficult to stop them, but after we made some adjustments, and made more of an effort defensively, then in the third and fourth quarters step by step we were able to achieve more offensively and move the ball. It's a good win, but we have the second game at home and I know Maccabi will make a big effort.
