Eurocup Round 4 brought UNICS a road defeat to “Buducnost”, 63:73
UNICS knew, they would not have an easy stroll in Podgorica. Marco Banic, previewing the game, said, that they were going to play the best Montenegrin team.
“Buducnost improves on the level they play almost every single year, - he emphasized. - Fans always support their home team actively, this is why it might be not that easy to play them on the road. They have got some new good players in their roster. They have a strong playmaker Omar Cook. He is very experienced, one of the team’s leaders. He knows how to play basketball. Another player we should keep an eye on will be Aleks Maric. I have no doubts, we will have a difficult game on the road, but we will do our best to win”.
Unfortunately, the game was not a success, and Marco himself did not bring much use to his team on court. Starting from the 2nd quarter UNICS was an underdog seeing his opponents ahead. They did their best to come close, and occasionally succeeded, but could not secure the lead.
The game’s start could not predict the final result. Parakhouski opened the score with his 2 point shot, followed by 3-pointer by Kaimakoglou. Langford boosted up the lead to 7 after a little more than 3 minutes of play, 11:4. Dragicevic and Maric cut back the gap, 11:9. UNICS tried to return the game’s strings. Williams killed his 2 points to make it 18:11, anyway the first quarter closed with just +1 lead of the guests, 20:19.
The 2nd quarter launched in a very unsuccessful manner. For fully 5 minutes to go our players could not score but a point. “Buducnost” on their part collected their jam. Jaramaz brought his team up at 22:20, booking the 8 points lead. UNICS returned in the game 5 minutes later. Parakhouski scored one of the two free throws at 21:28. His creative activity almost made the score even during two minutes, 28:28, and of course he could have done much more, just see the 4/8 free throws chart in the first half.
By the end of the quarter the hosts pulled themselves together, which brought them good fruits. Sehovic, Rikic and Dragicevic got their team 5 points up, 37:32. The personal chart spoke in favor of “Buducnost”. Maric collected 10 points, Dragicevic – 9 points. Langford had 12, Parakhouski – 8, and not a point by Colom and Milaknis.
UNICS almost caught their opponents after the break, 38:40. Kaimakoglou featured 42:43 with his long shot by the mid-time. Langford and Colom missed their long shot chances just to see a successful triple by Sehovic. Montenegrin team managed to collect 7 points to go and seal the period at 60:50.
-10 points was not a sentence before the last quarter. UNICS fought till the very end to play back. Williams combined Milaknis to cut the difference to 3, 57:60. Sehovic responded scoring 3 points, and Milaknis did not. Kaimakoglou and Gubanov failed to shoot out of the arc, and Parakhouski missed free throws (4/10). Luck almost abandoned the guests to give the way for the hosts, ending the battle at 73:63.
UNICS had 4 out of 22 long shots, and 11 missed free throws, which made the claim for the road win pretty groundless.
Igor Jovovic, “Buducnost” head coach:
-Secretly we hoped that we could make a big surprise. At the start we were impressed with their quality and they had priority. Behind firmness on defense, we built a patient attack. We managed to control a big opponent, which is very important. My guys deserve nothing but praise. We change three or four players guarding Langford and it brought results. Their other players did not make a real impact.
Evgeny Pashutin, UNICS Kazan head coach:
-We had a good start, but we stopped defending the right way. I understand that we allowed Buducnost VOLI to find the rhythm. In the second half we just followed them. We played better, but it was not enough. Simply, we have to play tighter, more aggressive, just like Buducnost VOLI.
